Coji-Coji: Japan’s Adorably Absurd Fairy Tale Friend
A surreal, colorful world where a cosmic child drops truth bombs with a smile—Coji-Coji is as weird as it is wise, and totally lovable.

“Coji-Coji(コジコジ)” is a whimsical, surreal comedy anime created by Momoko Sakura, the beloved author of Chibi Maruko-chan(ちびまる子ちゃん).
At first glance, Coji-Coji appears to be an innocent childlike creature. But don’t be fooled—Coji-Coji sounds silly, but sometimes says things that really hit the point. I often find myself laughing out loud at Coji-Coji’s unexpected remarks, only to nod in agreement a few moments later.
Coji-Coji is supposedly a "child of the universe" living in the fairy tale world of Meruhen Country(メルヘンの国). But beyond that, almost everything else about them is a mystery—and that mystery only adds to the show’s wonderfully weird atmosphere.

The worldbuilding is just as eccentric. The residents of Meruhen Country include animals, bugs, and all sorts of delightfully strange beings who coexist as equals. It's chaotic and charming in the best way.
Coji-Coji goes to “Meruhen School,” where all citizens learn how to entertain humans—because that’s their life mission. Apparently, they all aspire to become stars like Mickey Mouse, Snoopy, or Doraemon. That absurd premise had me bursting out laughing.
The animation itself is full of charm: hand-drawn with bright colors, and sometimes with unexpected perspectives that feel like a drone is flying through the world. Despite its retro style, the show is visually dynamic and full of surprises.
There’s even an official Coji-Coji YouTube channel now—so if you’re in the mood for something delightfully silly, gently philosophical, and colorfully strange, Coji-Coji’s got you covered.
