My Logbook of Everyday Oddities

I log everyday oddities before bed—funny mishaps, random moments, and ideas worth saving. Even a foot-long churro disaster can spark creativity!

My teeth gave up before the churro did.

I love humor and comedy—I enjoy joking around and being playful. But more than anything, I absolutely live for those little bizarre moments in everyday life!

I don’t want to just let those moments pass by like scenery outside a train window—I want to remember them and share them with others because I love making people laugh! That’s why I consider illustrating these unexpected stories to be one of my life’s creative missions.

Capturing Everyday Moments in a Logbook

Of course, I don’t always have paper and pen on hand when something funny happens. And I don’t always have the time to create a polished illustration right away.

So, since January, I’ve been keeping a daily logbook before bed, jotting down little thumbnails of what happened that day. I got this idea from Austin Kleon’s Steal Like an Artist, and it has become a habit.

I use a Daily Planner from LEUCHTTURM1917!

I write about what I watched, what I read, what I ate, and anything interesting that happened around me. Sometimes, flipping through the pages makes me nostalgic, reminding me of moments I had almost forgotten. Other times, I rediscover little seeds of inspiration that spark new creative ideas.

The Churro That Refused to Be Chewed

For example, today’s blog cover illustration comes from a recent churro disaster I experienced at a Subway near my place.

A while ago, I had amazing churros at a Mexican restaurant in Phoenix, Arizona, and I had been craving them ever since. So when I saw foot-long churros on the menu at Subway, I thought, Why not? Especially since the poster proudly said "Cinnabon Collaboration." It had to be good, right?

I took a big bite, and… !?!? It wouldn’t break apart. Even when I tried with my molars, I couldn’t chew through it. It felt like I was trying to eat sugarcane—no matter how much my teeth moved up and down, the churro just got flatter and flatter instead of breaking.

I turned to my husband, wide-eyed with disbelief, and we both burst out laughing. How is this even possible?!

Was I disappointed? Yes. But at the same time, this ridiculous moment became the perfect inspiration for an illustration.

Finding Joy in the Unexpected

Even when things don’t go as planned, they still turn into creative fuel. Thanks to my logbook, every day is filled with little moments of joy!
