No Music, No Charlie Yellow

On repeat: cute, chaotic songs that fire up my energy and imagination. Music isn’t just background—it’s the fuel for Charlie Yellow.

No Music, No Charlie Yellow
No Music, No Charlie Yellow, seriously.

Today’s blog is all about how cute and chaotic music is absolutely essential for creating my Charlie Yellow style illustrations!

Whenever I’m drawing for Charlie Yellow, I have to be listening to my favorite cute-but-chaotic songs. It’s like they put me into some kind of trance, and the ideas just start flowing out of me! I also tend to listen to the same song on repeat — over and over again.

I feel like singing along to my favorite lines or humming the melody helps boost my energy and gives me momentum. It’s almost like that comfort of familiar songs gives me the freedom to let my imagination run wild.

I especially love songs with female vocals. Two of my all-time favorites are “Tsukematsukeru” by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and “Denden Passion” by Dempagumi.inc. Their lyrics always give me courage. Both songs have super positive, go-for-it vibes that help me push through creative slumps or the anxiety of tackling difficult illustrations.

Tsukematsukeru is dangerously catchy!

I think Denden Passion is my all-time favorite J-pop idol song!

Oh, and the music videos for both songs are bursting with yurukawa power, which always inspires me too! I’ll write more about that next time.
